Preparing for your product shoot: What to include and provide for your photographer

There are so many things to prepare for when planning and packing up for a product shoot. So what should you include and provide for your photographer when doing a product shoot? Here are a few things that you should keep in mind for your own product shoot.

Making sure to include your brand’s atheistic into your product shoot is a must have. We want your images to be consistent with your product, website, and social media. Prior to your shoot, we will plan out the specifics including what kind of props that we will include and what kind of color palette that will be included.

Packaging and labels

Aspects of your visual brand can be included in your product shoot. Things like your product labels, packaging, and cards are things that supplement your product well and can be used to enhance your brand in your images.

Tools that you use to create your product

Adding in some of the tools you use to produce or create your product are great to add in as props to give your product images some interest. Without giving away your trade secrets, adding in your tools gives great context. Some examples include wisks for a cookie, wicks for candles, pens with your planner, etc.

3+ of each product

Visually, the eye loves when you place products into groups of 3. If you can provide me with 3 of each of your products, it’s nice to be able to style them in a way that is appealing to the eye. If you can’t, that’s fine too…I’ll use other props to supplement this rule of threes.

Different sizes/variations

Each unique product is treated as one product even if it has variations in size, color, font, or other options. I will shoot a one comparison image of all your variations together so that your clients can see the slight differences. Make sure to include the different variations in the products that you provide for me.

Props that compliment and add context to your product

I have props in my studio that are neutral and compliment most products, but please feel free to include any specific props that you would like to have in your images. During your planning meeting, we will talk in depth about what will be included in your images and what will need to be sourced prior to your shoot.

Shot List

If you have specific shots or specifications that you need for a website or project, please provide those details to me prior to your product shoot. Orientation of images is usually the biggest specification that clients ask for because their website sales page requires either landscape or portrait images.
